The Pink Lake

Salt Water Lake, or commonly known as The Pink Lake, is situated only a stone's throw from Melbourne city centre. It is obscurely a typical nature phenomenon that is caused by salt. Yes, salt. Lots of it.

An unusually high intensity of salt turns this man-make lake rosy pink. It happens during the peak of summer months when the temperature skyrockets over 40 degree celsius, with lots of sunlight and no rain. This extreme weather condition causes "algae growing in the lake's salt crust to produce a red pigment, called beta carotene, as part of its photosynthesis process".
