Double Exposure Vol. 3
Double Exposure: Socially Distant is a collaboration between two photographers, Suzanne Phoenix and Wuthipol Ujathammarat. This is the third in their ‘Double Exposure’ series with all photographs created since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020 until the end of 2021.
The Upper Yarra Valley is home to Suzanne and, while more country than city, it was part of the Melbourne Metropolitan lockdown restrictions that became the world record holders. All Suzanne’s photographs were created in her 5km restriction zone, encompassing Millgrove, Warburton and Wesburn. During daily walks, a sanctioned activity, Suzanne documented roadside discoveries, abandoned places and car wrecks, a Spoonville graveyard, nature and signs of life through our feathered and four legged friends.
Thousands of kilometers away in Samutprakarn, where Wuthipol resides, lockdown restrictions were somewhat loose with the unusual freedom to travel between his hometown and Bangkok. Wuthipol took this as an advantage and ventured out to different districts of Bangkok, to capture colourful and bold graphic imagery. Wuthipol drew his attention towards misplaced objects, obscure coloured structures, geometrical shapes and simplified urban mundane.
Both Suzanne and Wuthipol used walking and street photography as a way to help their mental wellbeing during the pandemic. Their photographs from Australia and Thailand join together to create evocative and colourful reflections of this time in double exposures.
